Kidney Stones
Siddha names: Kalladaippu, Kal, Siruneeraga karkal
What is Kidney Stone ?
A kidney stone is a solid mass made up of tiny crystals. One or more stones can be in the kidney or ureter or in Urinary bladder.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Kidney stones can form when urine contains too much of certain substances. These substances can create small crystals that become stones.
The biggest risk factor for kidney stones is dehydration.(Reduction in body water content)
Kidney stones may not produce symptoms until they begin to move down the tubes (ureters) through which urine empties into the bladder. When this happens, the stones can block the flow of urine out of the kidneys. This causes swelling of the kidney or kidneys, causing pain. The pain is usually severe.
A person who has had kidney stones often gets them again in the future. Kidney stones often occur in premature infants.
Some types of stones tend to run in families. Certain kinds of stones can occur with bowel disease, ileal bypass for obesity, or renal tubule defects.
There are different types of kidney stones. The exact cause depends on the type of stone.
§  Calcium stones are most common. They occur more often in men than in women, and usually appear between ages 20 – 30. They are likely to come back. Calcium can combine with other substances, such as oxalate (the most common substance), phosphate, or carbonate to form the stone. Oxalate is present in certain foods. Diseases of the small intestine increase the risk of forming calcium oxalate stones.

§  Cystine stones can form in people who have cystinuria. This disorder runs in families and affects both men and women.
§  Struvite stones are mostly found in women who have a urinary tract infection. These stones can grow very large and can block the kidney, ureter, or bladder.

Pregnancy care - An Kit for Normal/Natural & Health delivery

Every woman who is pregnant looks forward for a normal delivery as in normal delivery there are no post delivery problems in the long run. But today's hectic life and stress is leading to an increased number of cesarean deliveries. Taking balanced and nutritious diet is the foremost tip for the normal delivery.
What is a Normal Delivery?
Normal delivery is through vagina of mother's body. In normal delivery children are born between the 36th and 39th week of pregnancy. There are three stages in normal delivery
• Dilation
• Expulsion
• Placenta
The first stage of normal delivery starts when the cervix is 3 cm dilated. The actual process of dilation causes the onset of labour. Full dilation occurs when the cervix opens so wide that the head of the baby can come out of it and this is normally 10 cm. The duration of labor varies from woman to woman but if it is your first delivery then it may last for 8 hours or more and if it is your second or proceeding normal delivery then it is usually less than the first one. After every hour the cervix dilate to 1.2 cm for the period of two hours.
Second stage in normal delivery is of expulsion that happens when the cervix is fully dilated and ends with the birth of the baby. Beginning of second stage in normal delivery starts when the head of the baby is engaged in pelvis. The largest diameter of the baby's head has passed through the pelvic brim. Till now the head has also passed through the narrowest part of the pelvis that is below the interspinous diameter. Now the fetus head has to pass through the pubic arch and introitus. The fetal head at this point becomes visible in normal delivery and called "crown". Successful completion of the fourth stage happens with the head out. This is followed by fifth and sixth mechanism of normal delivery.
In the third stage of the normal delivery placenta is expelled out of uterus and this happens after the birth of the child. It comes out after 15 to 30 minutes of the birth of the baby.

Our daily life, routine, food, diet, medicinal aspects, prevention of diseases etc are described in various poems written by Siddhars. In ‘Agasthiyar Pindor-urpathi’ SiddharAgasthiyar described how union of male and female gamete, through a series of changes transforms into an individual and its arrival to the new world. Siddha is a health system which is most ancient and based on Three humoural (Vali, Azhal, Iyam) and Five Elemental (Prithivi, Vayu, Appu, Theyu, and Akayam) Theory.

After the delivery, the mother becomes weak and exhausted. Usually normal or vaginal delivery is considered safe and healthy. But if the pregnancy is high risk or if the baby is in an abnormal position, an elective Caesarean section is preffered.
Postpartum care is considered as important as prenatal care because pregnancy brings about various negative effects in the mothers body.Vatha increases during pregnancy. Digestion, Respiration and in short complete general health of mother is affected. Postpartum care in Siddha Medicine is described below revealing the Traditional Medicinal values and methods.
